National quitlines you can call for free or low-cost help

Most countries run a national quitline. They are usually free, usually staffed by trained counsellors, and in many countries they can arrange nicotine replacement or medication at no cost. People who use one are measurably more likely to still be smoke-free a year later than people who try alone.

You do not have to be ready to quit to call. Counsellors talk to people who are still undecided every day. You can ask what the options are and hang up without committing to anything.

If your country is not listed

Ask a pharmacist or your doctor — in most countries they can refer you, and in many they can prescribe nicotine replacement or medication directly. The World Health Organization also maintains country-level tobacco control information that usually names the national service.

What a quitline actually does
